In order to satisfy the need for passengers to sleep on the bus and to arrange the same number of passengers as seat buses in a limited space, Chinese designers created "double-decker sleeper buses".
Development began in the late 1980s, and sales peaked from 1996 to 1998. Sleeper buses once created a market performance of 7,200 units sold annually. With the diversification of transportation modes, the market for sleeper buses is also shrinking year by year.
After entering 2000, the sleeper bus market began to face increasing pressure, and more importantly: the interior environment of sleeper buses is poor, with small space, insufficient ventilation, and poor sanitary conditions. Since sleeper buses adopt a double-decker layout, their passenger area is actually 1.5 to 1.7 times that of seat buses, which is very dangerous.
On July 24, 2011, sleeper buses must be mandatory to install on-board video devices and actively promote measures to temporarily stop and rest from 2 am to 5 am.
